The Euro is little moved in Christmas Eve trading as many traders and investors consolidate their profits as the year draws to a close.
Data released early in Tuesday’s session highlighted the challenges the Eurozone will face in the New Year. GDP growth rate data for France showed that the regions second largest economy contracted in the third quarter of the year. On a month-by-month basis the French economy fell from the previous revised figure of 0.6% to come in at the expected -0.1% level. On a yearly basis GDP expanded by 0.2%.
The Netherlands was the only other Eurozone nation to publish data today. GDP in that country expanded more than expected on a quarterly and yearly basis offering some support to the Euro. On a monthly basis GDP expanded by 0.2% whilst on a yearly one the economy contracted less than expected coming in at -0.4%. Manufacturing confidence in the Netherlands also showed signs of improvement by coming in at -0.1.
Trade is expected to be very light over the next week due to the markets being largely closed for the Christmas holidays.
