The Euro began Monday having a mixed session against its peers as weaker than forecast data and ongoing concerns over the US government shutdown and the possibility that the world’s largest economy could default on its debts on October 17th.
At the start of the session the Euro pushed higher against the US Dollar as the US government shutdown dragged on into a second week and as concern mounts that no deal will be made to raise the nation’s debt ceiling.
Republican House Speaker John Boehner announced that he didn’t foresee an end to the impasse unless the Democrats agree to talks over budget cuts, something that President Barack Obama’s Democrats have refused to do, as a result of the worries investors favoured safer haven currencies such as the Swiss Franc and Japanese Yen over the Euro.
The single currency was little affected by the release of the latest Sentix investor confidence data for the Eurozone. According to the market research group, Sentix, its index for investor confidence fell to 6.1 in October, down from September’s figure of 6.5. Economists had been expecting a rise to 10.6. On the index a figure above 0.0 indicates optimism, below pessimism.
The report dampened the outlook for the region’s economy but in a session dominated by events in the United States it had relatively little impact on the single currency.
Against the Pound the Euro weakened slightly as economists increased their bets that Bank of England governor Mark Carney will choose to maintain interest rates at a record low when the Central Bank releases its policy decision on Thursday.
