Spain has been hammered by the Euro crisis, unemployment remains high and millions of Spaniards continue to struggle to make ends meets so it’s not much of a surprise that some people would take matters into their own hands to help the needy even it means resorting to illegal measures…
In the Andalucían city of Sevilla a band of Left-wing merry men raided a supermarket and stole school supplies which were then distributed to needy children unable to afford school equipment ahead of the beginning of the new academic year.
Unemployment in Andalusia is the highest in Spain, holding close to a staggering 36%, as a result malnutrition and child poverty has become a major issue. Many parents in the region gladly send their children to school in order for them to receive a free meal with any left over are being offered to parents at the end of the day.
The raid was carried out by members of the Andalucían workers union. Up to $2600 worth of supplies were stolen ranging from pens, paper and erasers.
“There is no money there is no jobs, people are losing their homes and people have no money, with this gesture today we have taken about eight to ten trolleys of school supplies which we will distribute to schools and villages in Andalucía” said one of the raiders.
There were no arrests as the supermarket was unsure that it would press charges in the wake of the raids popular support.
Marta Arias, a spokesperson for UNICEF Spain, said: “The level of child poverty in Spain was already high, around 20% when the crisis hit, and the figures are getting worse year by year. Not only are there more children under the poverty line, but those that are, are getting poorer.”
The Andalucían workers union carried out similar raids last year when it stole food from supermarkets to redistribute to hard pressed families.
